Maryland Smokefree workplace bill gets third try
Parts excerpted from the Capital, 12/17/03
Jen Valente thinks she smells like an ashtray at the end of the day, but she
doesn't smoke.

The patrons of the Annapolis bar she tends do, and she has no choice but to
inhale through their gray cloud of nicotine.

"We're the only workers in Maryland who are subjected to breathing poisonous air
while we're working," said Ms. Valente, founder of the Maryland chapter of
BREATHE-- Bar and Restaurant Employees Advocating Together for a Healthy
Environment.

She's counting on resurrected legislation to ban smoking in Maryland restaurants
for relief.

Two state lawmakers outlined their third try to pass smokefree workplace
legislation yesterday in Annapolis, surrounded by representatives of Smoke Free
Maryland, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, and the
state chapter of BREATHE.
