Romney Signs Smokefree Workplace Law
Massachusetts Becomes 6th Smokefree Workplace State
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney signed a statewide smokefree workplace law
yesterday, clearing the air in all workplaces, including restaurants, bars, and
clubs beginning July 5. Smokefree workplace laws had already been adopted in
about 100 cities and towns in Massachusetts, including Boston.
Massachusetts joins five other states -- New York, Connecticut, Maine, Delaware,
and California -- that already provide clean air in the workplace.
Supporters of the new law say it will improve the health of workers by
protecting them from diseases caused by tobacco smoke. "Smokefree workplace
legislation is a matter of respect and dignity for workers," says Joe Cherner,
founder of BREATHE-- Bar and Restaurant Employees Advocating Together for a
Healthy Environment. "All workers deserve a safe work environment, free of
cancer-causing toxins."
Opponents have said bars and restaurants in border communities could lose
business to neighboring states that don't have smoking bans, but that has never
happened elsewhere. If anything, the opposite has happened. Cities like Lake
Tahoe which span across two states (California and Nevada) provide a good
example.
