Puerto Rico Governor Signs Smokefree Workplace Law
Puerto Rico becomes 13th U.S. state/territory to go smokefree
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Puerto Rico Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila signed a bill
today that makes Puerto Rico the 13th U.S. state/district/territory to go
smokefree, joining California, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, Maine,
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Montana, Vermont, Washington, New Jersey and the
District of Columbia.

The law eliminates tobacco smoke in bars, casinos, and other workplaces -- as
well as in private cars with children under 13 years old aboard.

"To earn a living, employees should have right to breathe clean air," said Sen.
Maria de Lourdes Santiago Negron.

Tobacco addiction kills more than 3,600 Puerto Ricans each year, half of whom
lose an average of 20 years of life expectancy. In addition, a large percentage
of Puerto Ricans are adversely affected by secondhand smoke.
