Live free or die, but first put out that cigarette.

In a historic vote on Tuesday, the House passed a statewide smoking ban in all
restaurants and bars. After more than two hours of debate, lawmakers voted
189-156 to send the issue on to the Senate.

While the controversial ban has made it over the first legislative hurdle, its
future is in doubt as support in the Senate does not appear to be as strong.

Senate Majority Leader Bob Clegg said he did not know how the majority of
senators would vote on the issue. But Clegg made it clear he and the rest of
leadership are against the ban.

"Why are we passing a law that allows people to do something they can do
already? If you want to ban smoking, do it," Clegg said, noting businesses can
already choose to go smoke-free.
