Pennsylvania could join a handful of states that ban smoking in bars and
restaurants if Republican Jim Matthews makes it to the lieutenant governor's
office. 

The Montgomery County commissioner campaigning for the state's No. 2 position
said he is interested in implementing a statewide smoking ban in Pennsylvania
similar to those in New Jersey and 12 other states. 

"Smoking is a social concern as well as a public health issue," said Matthews, a
longtime smoker before he quit. 

He said he has not, however, discussed the initiative with Republican
gubernatorial candidate, former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann.
