Governor Janet Napolitano Endorses Proposition 201
Governor Janet Napolitano Opposes Proposition 206
Phoenix, Ariz. - October 18, 2006
Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, a longtime advocate of health initiatives,
today joined major public health
groups and small businesses in supporting Proposition 201.
"Proposition 201 offers real protection from secondhand smoke to everyone in
Arizona and levels the playing
field for small businesses," Napolitano said. "This proposition is the right
step for our economy and it is the
right step for our future."
Proposition 201, supported by the Smoke-Free Arizona coalition, would
eliminate smoking in all public places and
workplaces. The measure ensures that all offices, healthcare facilities, retail
stores, licensed childcare facilities,
sport arenas, hotel and motels, restaurants, bars and bowling alleys are
smoke-free. It also identifies several
common-sense exemptions including outdoor patios, cigar shops and private
veteran and fraternal clubs.
Fourteen other states have enacted similar comprehensive smoke-free legislation
with great success.
Napolitano has a long record of working for a healthier Arizona, from
serving on the board of directors for the
anti-tobacco-American Legacy Foundation to her efforts in protecting Arizona's
children.
Another smoking measure on the November ballot, Proposition 206, is a
tobacco-funded measure designed to
confuse voters. The governor stated that she opposes Proposition 206.
"As Attorney General, I witnessed firsthand the tactics of the tobacco
industry," Napolitano said. "Arizonans
need to understand that Proposition 206 is funded by R.J. Reynolds and is an
attempt to protect its tobacco
profits."
