Big Tobacco Spends Big Time in California
$65 million spent thus far, more to come
Proposition 86 would raise cigarette taxes by $2.60 per pack bringing prices in
line with New York.
Smoking currently costs California taxpayers $15.8 billion annually in health
care costs and lost productivity. Today's cigarette taxes don't come close to
picking up the tab.
If Proposition 86 passes, fewer cigarettes will be sold and tobacco companies
could lose billions. Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds have already spent $65
million trying to defeat Prop. 86.
Poll numbers show Prop. 86 is in a dead heat.
