When it comes to the well-being of Ohioans, the two most important statewide
questions are Issues 4 and 5. Both involve smoking in public places, but only
one, Issue 5, actually promotes public health.
Issue 5 is a comprehensive, sensible smoking ban, backed by all reputable public
health organizations, which would allow Ohio to join 14 other states that have
prohibited smoking in public places.
In contrast, Issue 4 is backed by the tobacco industry. Laced with exemptions,
it is not a ban at all. It is a deceptively complex constitutional amendment
that actually would prohibit the state or its communities from ever passing any
laws to protect residents or workers against secondhand smoke.
To make matters worse, even if both issues pass, Issue 4 prevails and only the
tobacco industry wins.
Therefore, just so there is no confusion, we reiterate: No on 4 and Yes on 5.
