Greetings from Smokefree DC!
In just a few weeks (on Sept. 12), a very important primary election
will be held in D.C. Voters will make their initial selections for
mayor, D.C. Council chair and five Council seats.
These races are critical. Although the D.C. Council earlier this year
passed a smokefree workplace law that applies to bars and restaurants,
it won't be fully implemented until January, when a new mayor and
Council take office (for more details about the law, see
http://www.smokefreedc.org/word_files/smokefree-law-facts.doc). The
mayor is responsible for implementing the law, and the Council has the
power to change it. It is imperative that we have a mayor and a majority
of Councilmembers who support the smokefree law.
Two weeks ago, Smokefree DC endorsed candidates based on their history
on the issue and the answers to a candidate questionnaire (you can see
the steering committee recommendations at
www.smokefreedc.org/e2006/recommendations.doc, all of which were adopted
by the members. Read responses to the questionnaires at
http://www.smokefreedc.org/e2006/candidates2006.php). We urge you to
help these candidates: Donate to them, volunteer in their phone banks,
walk door-to-door for them, offer a few hours on Election Day. Never
been involved in politics before? It's easy and fun! Just contact the
campaign offices.
Smokefree DC's policy is not to give or sell our email list, but we
wanted to give the candidates a chance to communicate directly with you.
So we invited them to send messages to you through us. We will send
several of these e-mails to you before the election.
Below are messages from some of the candidates endorsed by Smokefree DC.
Please help them out!

At-Large Councilmember - Phil Mendelson

Hello folks, there are barely two-weeks before election day, Tuesday,
September 12th, and plenty of ground to cover in this competitive race
to re-elect Phil Mendelson to DC's At-Large Council seat. Now until
September 12, the campaign will focus on building a strong volunteer
base in the city's 140 precincts, which would provide Phil a large voter
turnout and send him back to the DC Council.
Here is how you can help:
* Working the precincts on election day
* Hosting a fundraiser
* Door-knocking
* Phone banking (Monday evenings), and
* Handing out literature
Contact the campaign today, teamphil@reelectphil2006.com
and let us know how you can re-elect Phil Mendelson to the DC Council.

upcoming event - and one great opportunity to volunteer for the
campaign. First, we are holding a final campaign rally next Wednesday
(August 30th) from 7-9 p.m. at Town Hall restaurant in Glover Park (2218
Wisconsin Ave). It will be a fun event to give our campaign a great
boost as we enter the final days; please RSVP to
townhallevent@brooks2006.com. Also, if you are around Labor Day weekend
and would like to spend a few hours canvassing for the campaign, we
would love to have your help! You can contact our campaign at either
volunteer@brooks2006.com or 202.716.7511 to sign up. (Also, we've
reserved beautiful - and cooler -- weather for that weekend as well.)
Ward 5 - Kathy Henderson
Dear SmokefreeDC Membership:
I am honored that I received your endorsement for my bid to become the
next Ward 5 councilmember. I appreciate SmokefreeDC for taking a
leadership role to change an unhealthy paradigm in our city and for
standing up for workers' rights. Every citizen deserves the absolute
right to breathe clean air in the workplace and throughout our city. It
isn't easy to challenge smokers regarding their bad habit, which is
deleterious to nonsmokers and must cease accordingly. I appreciate your
member's courage and I stand with you in your fight, which is really a
fight to protect the health and well-being of all citizens. I am
committed to helping to educate the public regarding the dangers of
smoking and breathing in secondhand smoke. If elected, I will advocate
for strengthening existing legislative provisions to protect citizen's
health from smoking dangers.
Sincerely,
Kathy Henderson

P.S. Are you a Web designer with some free time? A new tobacco control
coalition in the District is seeking volunteers to design and build a
Web site for the coalition. The coalition includes public health
organizations, Smokefree DC and community groups that want to coordinate
tobacco control efforts in the District. If you are interested in
helping out, contact Angela Bradbery,
