Talking Points:

Mark up the bill and let it out of committee. You should be representing the citizens of DC, not the tobacco industry interests.

Although you may not believe that your 40 years of smoking ever hurt anyone but yourself, the reality is that secondhand smoke causes cancer and heart disease. Workers should not be exposed to it on the job, and members of the public should not have to breathe it when they patronize bars and restaurants.

Your years of public service are being tarnished by not only promoting the tobacco industry position, but doing everything you can to block letting the full council ever see a bill the majority of DC residents want. You are resposible for the disease and suffering of many DC citizens.

I applaud the courage of councilmembers Adrian Fenty, Kwame Brown, Kathleen Patterson, Phil Mendelson, Vince Gray and Sharon Ambrose for supporting Smokefree Workplace legislation. You should step out of the way and let DC citizens and workers enjoy toxin-free air.
