This two-page report from the Brown & Williamson document collection,
titled "A Tentative Hypothesis on Nicotine Addiction," indicates
British American Tobacco was aware of the addictive properties of
nicotine by 1963. It discusses the biochemical changes that occur in
the body due to nicotine use and the mechanism behind tolerance (need
for increasing amounts of nicotine). The final paragraph states,
"In conclusion, a tentative hypothesis for the explanation of
nicotine addiction would be that of an
unconscious desire to restore the normal physiological equilibrium of
the corticotropin releasing
system in a body in which the normal functioning of the system has
been weakened by chronic
intake of nicotine."
