Tobacco Money and Ballot Initiatives
Tobacco companies spent over $84 million

Tobacco companies spent a lot of money on the November elections and sometimes
reports were confusing or inaccurate (present company included). In effort to
straighten out the totals, here is what appears to have happened.

Not counting final expenditures (which have yet to be reported), tobacco
companies appear to have spent more than $84,000,000 (eighty-four million
dollars). A breakdown follows:

California: $65 million over a proposed cigarette tax increase
Arizona: $8.7 million (R.J. Reynolds) over a proposed clean indoor air law
Ohio: $5.4 million (R.J. Reynolds) over a proposed clean indoor air law
Missouri: $5.1 million over a proposed cigarette tax increase
South Dakota: $77,000 over a proposed cigarette tax increase
