1) Disparities in Smoking Cessation between African
Americans and Whites: 1990-2000
King G, Polednak A, Bendel RB,
Vilsaint MC, Nahata SB.
Am J Public Health. 2004 Nov;94(11):1965-71
BACKGROUND:
The authors examined disparities in smoking cessation rates between African
Americans and Whites from 1990 through 2000. The authors performed an analysis
of smoking cessation with data from the National Health Interview Surveys of
30,660 African Americans and 209,828 Whites, 18 to 64 years old, with
adjustment for covariates in multiple logistic regression models.
RESULTS: Whites were
significantly more likely than African Americans to be former smokers, and this
disparity in the quit ratio persisted from 1990 through 2000. After adjustment
for covariates, disparities were substantially reduced especially among women.
Among former smokers, African Americans were significantly more likely than
Whites to have quit successfully within the past 10 years. Statistical
adjustment for covariates reduces African American/White disparities in quit
ratios, and recent cessation patterns suggest possible future reductions in
disparities.
2) Youth Tobacco Cessation Guide
Available
The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention has released “Youth Tobacco Cessation: A
Guide for Making Informed Decisions.” The new guide was developed for the
Youth Tobacco Cessation Collaborative to assess current efforts designed to
help youth quit using tobacco and to identify “best practices.”
While the document is not currently online, it is expected to be posted soon.
Free copies are available by contacting Office on Smoking and Health
Publications, Mailstop K-50, 4770 Buford Highway, NE, Atlanta, GA 30341-3717 or call (770) 488-5705 (press 3).
3) HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson Announces New
Initiatives to Help Americans Quit Smoking
HHS
Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced today a series of initiatives designed to
help Americans quit smoking. The initiatives include the opening of a national
quitline number (1-800-QUITNOW) that puts users in
touch with programs that can help them give up tobacco. In addition, a new HHS
Web site (www.smokefree.gov) offers
online advice and downloadable information to make cessation easier.
The Secretary
also announced plans to make all HHS campuses tobacco-free, and to make all HHS
employees who use tobacco eligible for participation in cessation programs. He
made the announcements after a meeting with members of the CEO Roundtable on
Cancer and the tobacco control community.
4) Secondhand Smoke and Casinos Fact Sheets
ANR has produced two new fact sheets - Secondhand Smoke and Casinos and Casino Support for Smokefree Gambling.
These fact sheets address secondhand smoke levels in gambling establishments,
economic impact, and public support for smokefree gambling, in addition to
quotes from casino employees and officials. View the fact sheets at http://www.no-smoke.org/shs_casinos.htm
and http://www.no-smoke.org/casinoquotes.htm
5) Tobacco-Related Articles –
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports Released
The Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) would like to announce
the release of two articles, “State-Specific
Prevalence of Current Cigarette Smoking Among Adults—United States, 2003"
and "Indoor

Indoor Air Law—Western New York, 2003."
6) NNTPP – Case Studies
and Focus Group Summary Now Available
The National Network on Tobacco Prevention and Poverty
announces the release of two case studies written in collaboration with two of
our national Stakeholder organizations. Tobacco
Policy, Cessation, and Education in Correctional Facilities Case Study
highlights NNTPP’s collaboration with the National Commission on
Correctional Health Care and a joint survey conducted among correctional
facilities across the United States to examine tobacco use policies and
cessation programming. Integrating
Tobacco Control into The Salvation Army’s
Substance Abuse Training Curriculum Case Study focuses on NNTPP’s
collaboration with The Salvation Army.
It describes our efforts to integrate nicotine addition treatment into
The Salvations Army’s alcohol and substance abuse treatment programs.
In addition, NNTPP also released a summary report of our
focus group data collected in collaboration with West Virginia University-Prevention Research Center titled Smoking Habits and
Prevention Strategies in Low Socio-economic Status Populations. The
objectives of the focus groups were to review the social and cultural nuances
that support/encourage smoking in low SES populations, identify communication
channels most effective in reaching this population with tobacco
cessation/prevention messages, and to tailor prevention messages to reach low
SES adults.
Copies of the case studies and the focus group summary may
be obtained by calling the Health Education Council, toll-free at 1(800)
442-2836.
